The effect of education plus access on perceived fruit and vegetable consumption in a rural African American community intervention
This article reports the results of an intervention to provide nutrition education and access to fruits and vegetables through community gardens to change dietary behaviors among African Americans in rural Missouri. Cross-sectional surveys evaluated the intervention effect on blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and perceived fruit and vegetable consumption in this quasi-experimental study with a comparison group. Fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption has been linked to positive health outcomes, but most Americans do not meet recommended intake levels. Nutrition education is an effective strategy to promote and increase FV consumption. Farmers markets offer a unique opportunity to provide nutrition education in an environment facilitative to increased FV access and intake. No nutrition education program currently exists among farmers markets in Lubbock, Texas.

Impact of a Cancer Health Education Curriculum Among Milwaukee Public High School Students
This study implemented a cancer health education curriculum (CHEC) at a Milwaukee public high school with the goal of addressing cancer knowledge, fear and fatalism beliefs, and risk behaviors. The curriculum included interactive learning sessions and a service-learning final project. P54 Outcome Evaluation of the University of Tennessee Extension Farmers ’ Market Fresh Nutrition Education Program
In 2015, University of Tennessee Extension (UT Extension) piloted the nutrition education program Farmers ’ Market Fresh (FMF) with a primary objective of encouraging fruit/vegetable (FV) consumption by limited-resource families through purchases at farmers’ markets. FMF is funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) and has since been expanded to over 30 markets stat ewide.

Impact of HomeStyles-2 Intervention on Fruit and Vegetable Intake and Cognitions of Adults Participating in SNAP-Education
Although chronic disease risk is inversely associated with fruit and vegetable (F/V) intake, only 12% and 9% of adults eat enough F/V, respectively. Teaching adults strategies for increasing F/V intake and targeting F/V-related cognitions are effective components of nutrition interventions. SNAP-Education (SNAP-Ed) is a federally funded nutrition education program that teaches SNAP-eligible families to make better food choices and utilizes such interventions.
